Occupying the ground floor space of a handsome Georgian building, nested within Eden Locke, Edinburgh’s very first design-led apartment-hotel. Hype & Son is open to hotel residents as well as walk-ins. The total opposite of whatever images that surfaces in your head when thinking hotel lobby areas (I am thinking busy, noisy, crowded), the atmosphere here is quiet, calm, like you have walked into an urban retreat. A wide and airy space with high ceiling and expansive windows, pastel coloured walls and a mixture of designer furnishing. In the forms of giant floor cushions, naturalist rattan chairs, marble side tables and gold coffee tables. With additional help from large-scale tropical plants and warm lighting, all blend together to create this peaceful vibe. Design fans will need to resist the urge to sit and photograph every corner of this room.

This is the type of place where you can lounge and read a book, work away on your laptop with a cup of artisan coffee, or relax while chatting with loved ones. Comfortable enough to take a prolonged break from the long walks (the best way to see Edinburgh), and stylish enough requiring a stop in your limited time in visiting Edinburgh. Not to mention a great selection of speciality teas and coffee, locally produced pastry and in the evening, a carefully hand-selection of spirits. The selection criteria? “Unless a spirit can be served neat, it’s not on the menu. Unless the craft beer is created with the same passion and precision to detail as winemaker does wine, it’s not on offer.” Pure passion that is, and we love that.
