Down a narrow drive, at the foot of a mountain and head of Loch na Dal, you will arrive at Kinloch. Formerly a hunting lodge dating back to the 16th century, the estate has been in the MacDonald clan's ownership for eight generations. With the ground floor rooms like the drawing room, the bar lovingly decorated with family heirlooms, the feel is grand but uses of tartan and tweed keeps the mood cosy and intimate.
The dinner service starts with canapés and drinks served in the bar, with many objects to feast your eyes on, especially if you are a whiskey fan. Moving onwards to the elegant main dining room. From the dark green walls adorned with family oil portraits, to the beautifully laid out cutlery set and sparkling glasses on the table. This is a room you will remember. With soft classical music in the background, dinner is served in the form of five dishes made from local ingredients. Scallops cooked to perfection was my favourite, followed closely by the delight of mango sorbet and coconut cream. As the evening goes on, the mood becomes more lively as more dinners from the second sitting join the room. To finish off, enjoy tea or coffee in the drawing room. With the sounds of logs burning and a darkening sky over the loch, this was a very memorable evening indeed.
The dinner menu is £80 per person for five courses, including canapés before and coffee and petit fours.
